Shared Opposition to US Military Presence in the Region
For his part, Lavrov thanked Kim for what he described as North Korea’s military contribution to the defense of Russia’s Kursk region, although no further details were provided.
According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the talks included a detailed exchange of views on developments on the Korean Peninsula and broader Northeast Asia.
Both sides agreed that the growing military activity of the United States and its allies, including nuclear-related exercises, is the main driver of heightened tensions in the region.
The Russian statement also stressed that Moscow and Pyongyang remain committed to resolving all issues on the Korean Peninsula through political and diplomatic means and will continue to pursue a shared approach to regional challenges.
Lavrov’s visit to North Korea comes as part of the second round of the Russia–North Korea strategic dialogue at the foreign ministerial level. He arrived in the eastern city of Wonsan several days ago for discussions with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui.
