Hezbollah swept in the region of Bekaa and Baalbek-Hermel in municipal and mayoral elections, as its candidates won Beirut, results showed on Monday.
The Lebanese voted on Sunday in the governorates of Beirut, Bekaa and Baalbeck-Hermel, in the third round of municipal elections. The country’s governorates of Nabatieh and South Lebanon are to vote next Saturday (May 24).
Hussein Al-Nemr, Hezbollah official in the region of Bekaa, which also includes Baalbek-Hermel, announced on Monday that all candidates supported by Hezbollah won municipal and mayoral seats in the two governorates.
“Electoral lists backed by the national duo secured absolute victory in Bekaa and Baalbek-Hermel,” Al-Nemr told a press conference in the city of Baalbek, referring to Hezbollah and Amal Movement.
“Of 80 municipal councils, 28 lists won uncontested,” Al-Nemr said, adding that 22 others were lists nominated by local families who are backed by the national duo.
Baalbek Battle
Meanwhile, Al-Nemr stressed that the electoral battle in Baalbek was “political par excellence,” pointing to the sweeping victory of candidates backed by Hezbollah and Amal Movement.
“In Baalbek, our list swept the elections as it won by about 6,000 votes over the competing list,” he told reporters.
Al-Nemr hailed the people of Bekaa and Baalbek-Hermel for supporting the resistance, affirming that: “The resistance in Bekaa does not need a referendum as the people announced their choice 40 years ago.”
