Jordan’s state security court Wednesday issued jail sentences and death verdicts against 21 Jordanians convicted of planning to carry out terrorist operations inside the kingdom.
The court sentenced five defendants to death by hanging, three were sentenced to 15 years, eight were sentenced to ten years, four were sentenced to three years and one was given seven-year in prison sentence.
The charges included “carrying out terrorist acts using weapons that led to the death of a man”, “the manufacture of dispersed materials intended to be used to carry out terrorist acts,” “possession of weapons and ammunition intended to be used to commit terrorist acts”, “promoting the ideas of a terrorist group” and “recruiting people to join a terrorist organization.”
Jordan had announced on March 2 that it foiled a terrorist plot by the so-called ‘Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’ (ISIL) takfiri group to strike civilian and military targets after a security operation carried out by security forces in Irbid governorate north of Amman.
That operation killed seven militants and a security man and injured several others. The security forces managed to seize terrorists’ guns, ammunition, arms, explosives and detonators that were held by armed group elements.
