The Syrian Arab Republic delegation, headed by Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, held on Tuesday morning at the UN HQ in Geneva a new session of talks with the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura, in the framework of the seventh round of the intra-Syrian dialogue.
In a statement following the session with de Mistura, al-Jaafari, said that the delegation held serious discussions with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura regarding the issue of counter-terrorism, or what is known as the fourth basket.
Al-Jaafari said these discussions lasted for two and a half hours, and this paves the way towards resuming the discussion of this issue which is the top priority for the Syrian Arab Republic delegation.
He said that counter-terrorism should also be the top priority for the entire world, because terrorism has become an international phenomenon that struck the biggest capitals in the world.
“What we were warning against, about terrorism becoming a global phenomenon that will affect everyone including its sponsors, has become a reality now” he added.
Al-Jaafari said that a meeting is underway between legal and technical experts from the Syrian Arab Republic delegation and de Mistura’s team to discuss the 12-principle paper on the basis and goals of the political process.
The seventh round began on Monday, with the Syrian Arab Republic delegation holding talks with de Mistura.
In the same context, de Mistura held on Monday a meeting with ambassadors of the UN Security Council states to inform them about the 7th round of dialogue in Geneva.
Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN in Geneva Alexey Borodavkin said following the meeting that De Mistura informed them about his plans and ideas, and how he intends to conduct these talks and work with the parties, asserting that all the attending diplomats supported his plans, hoping to achieve progress in the talks.
