Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reported to have resumed on Monday talks with opposition party head Benny Gantz over a compromise on the judicial coup legislation, as the Israeli political system gears up for a critical High Court hearing on Tuesday over a law passed in July curbing judicial review.
Netanyahu and Gantz are reportedly holding indirect talks mediated by President Isaac Herzog’s staff.
On Monday, a Likud Knesset Member confirmed that Netanyahu’s “effort to soften the judicial reform legislation is also meant to soften the High Court before its ruling on the repeal of the reasonableness standard.
Asked in a radio interview, MK Eliyahu Revivo answered “correct,” to the notion of a Netanyahu plan to ‘soften’ the High Court justices.
On Tuesday, all 15 Supreme Court judges will take part in the hearing on the reasonableness standard, which the Knesset coalition revoked in July. The new law that is being challenged in court ended the High Court’s authority to strike down government decisions that it deems unreasonable.
Last week, Netanyahu said that a compromise agreement on the judicial overhaul is feasible. Netanyahu called on National Unity party leader Benny Gantz to return to the negotiating table.
