A leaked intelligence report obtained by the Washington Post suggests that the Ukrainian government planned to use Kurdish fighters as a covert means to launch attacks on Russian troops in Syria.
The document revealed that the Ukrainian defense ministry’s military intelligence had strategized to train operatives from the Syrian Democratic Forces to execute “direct action” activities and use UAV attacks against Russian service members in Syria.
The Washington Post, in their report on the leaked documents, stated that the plan would have created a “new battlefield” located far from the current war in Ukraine. The strategy appeared to aim at “imposing costs and casualties on Russia and its Wagner paramilitary group.”
The leaked files detailed how the operation would provide Ukraine with “deniability options.” This would be possible since the Russian positions that would be targeted had previously been attacked by US-backed and Turkish-backed militias fighting the Syrian government on Syrian territory.
The revelations have sparked concern in the international community, with some warning that such an operation could escalate tensions between Ukraine and Russia, and lead to a wider conflict. The Ukrainian government has not commented on the leaked files, and it remains unclear if the plan was ever put into action.
Nevertheless, the incident highlights the ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, and the potential for conflict to spread beyond Ukraine’s borders.
