President Michel Aoun welcomed on Friday House Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Mikati to discuss the demarcation of the maritime borders with occupied Palestine.
The meeting was specifically devoted to identify Lebanon’s response to the proposal of the US mediator Amos Hochstein.
It was decided to call the United States of America to continue its efforts to complete negotiations for the demarcation of southern maritime borders, in accordance with the framework agreement in a way that preserves Lebanon’s supreme interest and stability in the region.
President Aoun, Speaker Berri and Premier Mikati stressed that this file is national par excellence and should be kept away from useless quarrels and bidding.
The Lebanese daily, Al-Akhbar, mentioned that Lebanon was indirectly informed that the file of importing gas and electric power from Jordan and Egypt will be approached in accordance with Lebanon’s attitude towards the demarcation issue.
The Us mediator has always rejected Lebanon’s insistence on preserving its rights and natural resources.
It is worth noting that Lebanon insists on its right to demarcate its southern maritime border at line 29 which secures an additional area of 1,430 square kilometers in the sea.
