Lebanese Speaker of the House, Nabih Berri, currently with an accompanying delegation in Geneva, said on Tuesday that the election of a new Lebanese President was not enough to pacify the situation at the local scene.
“We are a few steps away from the election of a president on the 31st of October. We hope this deadline will be smoothly accomplished due to Lebanon’s dire need of a president,” Berri said in an address he gave yesterday evening during a dinner banquet held by Lebanon’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Najla Asaker.
“Massive efforts are required to tackle other Lebanese deadlines, such as drafting an electoral law which grants women equality. First and foremost, the law should state a women’s quota and simultaneously be based on proportionality. This law should also take baby steps towards assuaging sectarianism,” Berri said.
The House Speaker also shed light on the fact that Lebanon has been enduring the ramifications of the rampant regional crises.
“Lebanon has tolerated what no other county has ever tolerated in the history of humankind. The number of refugees and displaced people has reached more than half of our population. This is posing grave danger on our national economy, education, and society,” Berri added.
