Israeli military court postponed on Wednesday the trial of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) leader Maher Al-Akhras until next week, as the Palestinian prisoner went ahead with hunger strike.
According to Muhjat al Quds Foundation, the “Salem” Israeli military court has postponed the trial of Al-Akhras until September 6, under the pretext of “conducting further investigation.”
Mohammed Al-Shaqaqi, the spokesperson of Muhjat al Quds, confirmed that Al-Akhras has reiterated his determination to continue the hunger strike in protest against his arbitrary detention.
He affirmed that the Israeli occupation is “attempting to kill” Al-Akhras, noting that since his arrest (on August 23), the occupation’s intentions “were clear.”
In this context, the spokesman said that a Zionist officer told the Palestinian prisoner that his fate would be similar to that of Khader Adnan, who was martyred last May after being deliberately neglected at Israeli jails as he was on a hunger strike protesting his administrative detention.
As he voiced determination to go ahead with the hunger strike, Al-Akhras said in a message on Tuesday that an Israeli officer introduced himself as a regional officer and asked him whether he takes any medication.
“I told him that I don’t want neither medicine nor food,” Al-Akhras said in his letter, cited by Mujat Al-Quds.
“The officer replied by saying: You will end up just like Sheikh Khader. That’s what we did to Sheikh Khader,” Al-Akhras added in his Tuesday letter.
For its part, the Palestinian Prisoner Club reported on Wednesday that the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) transferred Al-Akhras on Tuesday from the Jalama prison to the Megiddo detention center.
The club noted, meanwhile, that Al-Akhras trial was delayed for the second time as the Israeli military court extended his detention for additional seven days.
Al-Akhras was repeartedly jailed by Israeli occupation. He went on a 103-day hunger strike in protest of his detention without charges or trial in 2020.
