US State Department voiced Washington’s readiness to partially lift sanctions previously imposed on Iran as a means to “resume mutual compliance” with the nuclear deal.

The remarks were announced by a spokesman for the US State Department, Ned Price at a press conference Wednesday.

“We are prepared to lift sanctions that are inconsistent with the JCPOA [the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action],” Price told reporters, referring to the official name of the 2015 deal.

The spokesman noted that the United States favors a “compliance for compliance” formula and observed that there would be no unilateral gestures.

The JCPOA Joint Commission held its 18th round of talks in the Austrian city of Vienna, with representatives of Iran, Russia, China, France and the UK in attendance.

The US has been absent from the Commission and its discussions since 2018, when former American president Donald Trump took Washington out of the JCPOA and returned the sanctions that the nuclear accord had lifted.

Meanwhile, there have been diplomatic attempts to make the path back to the full restoration of the JCPOA. As the US urges Iran to return to its nuclear commitments, the Islamic republic insists that the White House is the party which must make the first step by lifting its sanctions.
