US Warned Iran about Israeli Plot to Assassinate Top Negotiators: WP

Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi and Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in Switzerland talks (June 21, 2026).

In the spring, U.S. officials suspected that ‘Israel’ intended to kill Iran’s top negotiators and sent a warning to Tehran to take precautions, The Washington Post reported.

The paper cited current and former officials familiar with the matter as saying that senior U.S. officials feared that ‘Israel’ intended to assassinate Iran’s top negotiators as the Trump administration pursued a high-stakes deal to end the war there and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Washington’s objection to killing Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the country’s parliamentary speaker, was so acute that this spring it took the extraordinary step of asking intermediaries to warn Iran about Israel’s assassination aims, the officials said.

The United States of America has been always supportive of all the Zionist crimes against the Arabs and Muslims. However, the Iranian audacity and power obliged the Americans to seek a diplomatic solution for the crisis left by the recent war on the Islamic Republic.

Thus, the US interests may have contradicted with those of the Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu who opposed the negotiations between Washington and Tehran. On the other hand, the US President Donald Trump displayed keenness on concluding a deal with Iran.
