A US airstrike on Iran’s coast late Friday triggered a swift retaliation by the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, which said it struck American military targets across the region.

In a statement, the IRGC said the US attack, carried out under the pretext that Iran had obstructed a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, constituted a violation of its commitments, adding that Washington has repeatedly breached agreements.

The IRGC stressed that, under Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Tehran and Washington, Iran is responsible for regulating maritime traffic in the strategic waterway, accusing the US of inciting tensions to undermine that arrangement.

“In response to this aggression, IRGC naval forces targeted US military deployment points,” the statement said.

It warned that “in the event of a repeat of aggression, our response will be more extensive.”

Earlier, US Central Command confirmed it had conducted strikes against targets in Iran, claiming the action was in response to what it described as a drone attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo vessel MV Ever Lovely near the Strait of Hormuz off Oman’s coast.
