Sources Close to Speaker Berri: “No Room for Any Form of Normalization with Israeli Enemy”

Sources close to Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri affirmed on Tuesday that the position of the Speaker of Parliament is firm regarding refusal to expand the framework of direct negotiations with the Israeli enemy, or to task any committee other than the existing “Mechanism”.

In remarks to Al-Binaa Lebanese daily, the sources stressed that Speaker Berri’s stance is clear that the Mechanism committee is tasked with handling military, security and technical issues only.

The sources indicated that Speaker Berri stressed Lebanon’s constants in any negotiation process, foremost among them the Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese territories, the cessation of attacks, the demarcation of borders, and the return of prisoners.

“Any deviation of the negotiations from this path will be met with the appropriate response, for every incident has its own context,” the sources cited the Lebanese speaker as saying.

“No room for any form of normalization of ties with the Israeli enemy,” the sources added to Al-Binaa.

The paper added that Speaker Berri briefed the UN Security Council delegation, who visited Beirut last week, on the current situation in south Lebanon in light of the ongoing Israeli attacks.

The Lebanese Speaker told the UNSC delegation that Lebanon has fully implemented the obligations of the 2024 ceasefire agreement, while ‘Israel’ has not adhered to any of its commitments, Al-Binaa reported.

The daily also learned that Speaker Berri is still refusing to meet former ambassador Simon Karam, who joined the technical ceasefire meetings.
