Ali Hasan Khalil, political advisor to Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri on Monday hit back at recent allegations made by the head of the Lebanese Forces party Samir Geagea, who accused the Lebanese of obstructing legislative work and refusing to amend the electoral law.
“Those who truly want elections do not use them as a weapon against others,” MP Khalil said in remarks at the Lebanese Parliament.
He stressed that holding parliamentary elections on schedule “is not open to debate, and is not subject to political blackmail or bargaining.”
“What is happening today is not a technical issue, nor a democratic reform, nor a concern for expatriates and their votes. Rather, it is an attempt to exploit a political moment in the absence of equal opportunities for candidates and voters to express their opinion on this matter, in an attempt to exploit expatriates for interests that have no connection to them,” he said in remarks carried by local media.

MP Khlail addressed Geagea as saying that the Lebanese Forces bloc “was the first to obstruct the discussion of a new electoral law, which was intended to implement the Taif Agreement and was proposed by the Development and Liberation bloc years ago.”
