Speaker Berri’s Office Responds to President Aoun’s Remarks: At Least Inaccurate

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun (L) and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri (R) at Baabda Presidential Palace (March 23, 2026).

The media office of Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri issued a statement that responded to the remarks of President Joseph Aoun who claimed that the direct negotiations with the Israeli enemy were coordinated with Speaker Berri and that 2024 truce agreement granted the enemy “freedom of action”.

“With all due respect to the office of the presidency and the pronouncements of His Excellency the President, the remarks made by His Excellency the President of the Republic before the economic bodies are inaccurate, to say the least, particularly regarding the November 2024 agreement and the subject of the negotiations,” the statement mentioned.

President Aoun had stated before the delegation of economic bodies: “In every step I have taken concerning the negotiations, I have been in coordination and consultation with the Speaker of Parliament and the Prime Minister, contrary to what is being reported in the media. As for the criticism that Lebanon, through the American statement issued following the tripartite talks in Washington, agreed to grant Israel the freedom to continue its attacks on Lebanon, I say that this statement was issued by the US State Department. It is the same text adopted in November 2024, which was approved by all parties at the time. It is a statement, not an agreement, because an agreement is reached after the conclusion of negotiations.”
