Fayyad: 2026 Budget Deepens Divides, Reconstruction and Resistance at Risk

During the parliamentary debate on the 2026 budget, MP Ali Fayyad, a member of the Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc, addressed budgetary and parliamentary authority issues. He warned of the dangers in certain positions taken by some colleagues regarding the legislative authority of the Finance and Budget Committee, emphasizing the need to avoid institutionalizing such views.

Fayyad described the proposed budget as “corrective, not reformist,” and a continuation of previous budgets. He noted the government’s failure to address public sector salary increases, which has created an additional problem requiring urgent attention.

He highlighted that tax revenues in the budget had increased by 150 percent on salaries and wages and by 160 percent on vehicle registration fees, contending that this reflects a deepening social divide and increased distortions in wealth distribution.

Fayyad called for 2026 to focus on rebuilding what the Israeli enemy destroyed, stating that reconstruction would allow thousands of displaced families to return home. He emphasized that addressing public sector salaries is urgent and must not be delayed.

He affirmed that reconstruction should not be postponed until a sovereign wealth fund is established or foreign aid arrives. Fayyad pointed out that a large segment of Lebanese society endures daily Israeli attacks of killing, destruction, and displacement, yet remains steadfast in defense of their land and in loyalty to their martyrs.

MP Ali Fayyad stated that some political officials’ positions on disarmament clearly reveal the Israeli role in targeting the resistance, warning these stances are a prelude to internal strife.
