U.S. President Donald Trump has welcomed the completion of the American military withdrawal from Iraq, describing the end of the U.S. mission as a victory and sharply criticizing the decision that originally brought American forces into the country.
In remarks accompanying the withdrawal, Trump said that the United States had made “very bad” decisions by becoming involved in Iraq, describing the conflict as a “quagmire” that had continued for many years. He said that chapter would soon become part of history.
Trump also characterized the American military involvement in Iraq as a costly undertaking. In a post on social media, he referred to it as a “very expensive excursion into Hell” and said that he had ultimately decided that it was time for America to go home.
The remarks came as the United States formally completed the withdrawal of its remaining troops from Iraq.
The withdrawal follows an agreement reached between Washington and Baghdad in 2024. Under that arrangement, the U.S.-led coalition’s military mission in Iraq was scheduled to end, with the final withdrawal taking place by September 30, 2026.
Trump portrayed the departure as a positive development for both countries.
