Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its Aerospace Force air defense units intercepted and destroyed an advanced MQ-1 drone over the airspace of the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, the IRGC Public Relations Department said the drone was intercepted by the Aerospace Force’s advanced air defense system operating under Iran’s integrated air defense network.

“The advanced and modern air defense system of the Aerospace Force of the Revolutionary Guard, under the control of the country’s integrated air defense network, was able to intercept and destroy an advanced MQ-1 drone over the airspace of the Strait of Hormuz,” the statement read.

No official details were immediately provided on the operator, though the MQ-1 is a US-made drone widely used by the US military.

The US military has lost at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones during the war with Iran, or roughly 25 percent of its fleet, The Washington Post reported last month, citing three US officials familiar with the matter.

The Reaper is used to conduct surveillance and targeted strikes, and it can cost between $30 million and $50 million depending on the type of sensors and weapons it carries, according to the Air Force. The potential taxpayer cost of recent losses is over $1.3 billion for that weapon system alone.
