Israeli political analyst Alon Ben-David said that the military realizes the coalition leaders’ intention to ignite a new conflict prior to the elections, whether in the West Bank or in Gaza, asking: What will the Chief of Staff and the generals do when assigned to fight a war where the true security need is unclear?
Ben-David added, as quoted by Maariv newspaper, that behind all the government’s efforts to reignite conflict in one of the sectors lies a troubling idea: that the elections, for the Prime Minister, are not about the country’s future, but about his freedom and personal future.
He explained that Netanyahu sees the poll results and realizes the extent of the risks he is taking, noting that “there is nothing in his behavior so far to reassure that he will not resort to a security move to postpone the elections.”
In Gaza, Ben-David pointed out that what is called “kite terrorism” could provide a pretext for the government to order the IDF to initiate a large-scale ground operation.
He added that the fact that kites launched from Gaza have been found so far in Israel without containing any explosives or incendiary materials has not prevented the media, and not just official channels, from adopting the “kite terrorism” narrative.
