In response to the much talk about “lines,” “zones,” and other terms when describing the situation in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL issued a statement to affirm that, for the United Nations and UNIFIL, there is only one relevant line: the Blue Line.
The Blue Line was established in 2000 as the “line of withdrawal” designated by the United Nations as a reference to verify the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Lebanese territory, the statement added.
“UNIFIL monitors the Blue Line and reports developments in accordance with its mandate.”
Any Israeli military presence north of the Blue Line constitutes a violation of Security Council Resolution 1701, which UNIFIL monitors and reports, the statement affirmed.
“Peacekeepers also monitor and report on relevant activities conducted by non-governmental armed actors within the mission’s area of operations.”
