Roman Gofman, the recently appointed director of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, has removed two senior officials who were closely involved in developing a reported plan aimed at toppling Iran’s Islamic Republic, according to a report by Israeli Channel 12.
The report identified the officials as the head of Mossad’s intelligence directorate, who took charge of the division in December last year, and the head of the agency’s Iran division.
Both were said to have played central roles in formulating a written operational strategy designed to overthrow the Iranian regime with support from minority groups inside Iran and eventually establish an alternative leadership.
According to Channel 12, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the proposal while attempting to persuade US President Donald Trump to support military action against Iran in February.
Security sources quoted by the broadcaster said the two officials had been at odds with Gofman since he assumed office.
However, the sources stressed that their departures were being made by mutual agreement as part of a wider restructuring of the Mossad, adding that both officials are expected to remain within the agency in different positions.
