Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri stressed that what matters now, after the summit between US President Donald Trump and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Washington, is “the results on the ground, not just the way things appeared.”

Speaker Berri told Asharq Al-Awsat: “The key after this meeting is to solidify the ceasefire and withdrawals, which has not happened yet.” He pointed out that “the withdrawal carried out from the town of Zawtar al-Gharbiya on Monday hardly counts as a withdrawal, as the town is very small and was not fully occupied. Furthermore, the criminal bombings targeting homes, civilian neighborhoods, and infrastructure continue, as do the attacks on residents on the outskirts of the occupied villages.”

Berri stressed that the success of this summit hinges on achieving these steps, adding : “I said before, ‘Achieve results, and I will be proud of you…’ which has not yet happened.”

Asharq Al-Awsat asked Speaker Berri about his impression of the US president’s statement that Berri would join the process once he saw progress in the agreement. Berri responded with a laugh, saying, “It seems Trump understands me better than the Lebanese do.”
