Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi described the closure of the Strait of Hormuz as a direct consequence of the US’ violations of the Islamabad MoU and its provocative actions, warning that Washington bears responsibility for undermining diplomacy and regional stability.
Aragchi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot on Tuesday, as the two sides exchanged views on the latest bilateral, regional, and international developments.
Referring to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Aragchi said the measure was “the direct result of the United States’ violation of its commitments under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding and its provocative actions.”
He stressed that responsibility for the consequences of the current situation rests with the party that abandoned its commitments and, by persisting in unilateral policies, has jeopardized the diplomatic process and regional stability.
Aragchi also protested the unconventional and diplomatically inappropriate conduct of two French diplomats in Tehran, calling their actions unacceptable.
He stressed that compliance with the laws and regulations of the host country, as well as adherence to internationally recognized diplomatic principles and norms, is essential for the continued operation of foreign diplomatic missions.
The Iranian foreign minister called on the French government to take the necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such actions.
The telephone conversation came a day after Iran summoned the French chargé d’affaires over the conduct of two French Embassy employees in Tehran.
On Wednesday, the head of the Foreign Ministry’s 2nd Department for Western Europe said that, according to reports from the relevant authorities, the two French nationals had attended a meeting on Sunday evening with several security suspects who were under prosecution. He said the two were briefly questioned by security officers, adding that numerous documents related to anti-security activities were discovered at the location and are currently under investigation by the competent authorities.
