The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) announced on Monday the election of Khalil al-Hayya as head of the movement’s Political Bureau, succeeding the martyred leader Yahya al-Sinwar.
Who is Al-Hayya?
Al-Hayya is one of the most prominent political leaders in the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas. He was a member of the Political Bureau and the movement’s deputy head. Born in 1960, he holds a doctorate in Sunnah and Hadith studies. He became involved in Islamic resistance activism early on, under the guidance of the movement’s founder, the martyr Ahmed Yassin, and participated for decades in popular, political, and resistance activities both inside and outside Palestine. Al-Hayya rose to prominence after the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound (Operation Peace Spring) as one of the movement’s leading political figures. He led the Hamas delegation to Egypt in February 2014 to resume talks related to a ceasefire and prisoner exchange. He then continued to manage the negotiating team in indirect negotiations with the Israeli occupation, under Qatari and Egyptian auspices and mediation, amidst the ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip.
