Iran’s Foreign Ministry has condemned US military assaults on monitoring facilities along the country’s southern coast on Wednesday, warning that Washington would bear responsibility for the consequences of escalating tensions.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the ministry said the US military launched attacks in the early hours of the day against several monitoring and surveillance centers on Iran’s southern coastline, describing the operation as a clear violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.

The ministry said the strikes constituted “a flagrant violation” of the first clause of the Pakistan-brokered MoU, which requires the cessation of military operations.

It said that the attacks, coupled with the US Treasury Department’s decision the previous night to revoke Iran’s oil sales authorization, were in violation of arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz, adding that the continuation of Israeli military aggression and terrorist acts against Lebanon, had rendered “important and fundamental parts” of the agreement ineffective.

“The responsibility for the dangerous consequences of this escalation rests with the treaty-breaking US regime,” the statement said.

The Foreign Ministry also stressed the international legal obligation of all governments, particularly neighboring countries on the southern shores of the Persian Gulf, to prevent aggressor states from using their territory or facilities to carry out hostile acts against Iran.

“Any cooperation in committing the crime of aggression against Iran amounts to complicity and participation in that crime,” it said.

The ministry also urged the UN Security Council and the UN secretary-general to fulfill their responsibilities for maintaining regional and international peace and security.

It added that Iran’s armed forces, acting under Article 51 of the UN Charter, would not hesitate to defend the country’s territorial integrity, national sovereignty and security against US military aggression and will target the origin of any attack.
