In a historic display of national grief, millions of mourners converged on the holy city of Qom Tuesday morning to offer funeral prayers for the late Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, and several members of his family who were killed in a US-Israeli airstrike on February 28.
The massive prayer service was led by Grand Ayatollah Abdullah Javadi Amoli at the Holy Jamkaran Mosque, drawing worshippers, religious scholars, government officials, and military commanders. The crowds, which swelled to millions, filled the mosque’s courtyards and prayer halls to capacity before dawn, with tens of thousands more spilling onto the surrounding roads and avenues.

Mourners began arriving in Qom as early as Monday afternoon, traveling on foot and by vehicle from across Iran, many carrying red banners alongside the Iranian national flag. The ceremony marked the fourth day of a multi-city funeral that began Friday in Tehran, where the leader’s body lay in state at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla. Monday saw millions line the streets of the capital in one of the largest public funerals in modern history, with participants from nearly 100 countries in attendance.

Following the prayers, a funeral procession moved from the Jamkaran Mosque toward the Holy Shrine of Sayyida Fatima Masumeh, one of Shia Islam’s most revered sites. Qom Governor Akbar Behnamjou confirmed that provincial authorities and volunteer organizations had completed extensive preparations to accommodate the unprecedented influx of mourners.
The solemn ceremonies are set to continue Wednesday in the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, where additional funeral rites will be held. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and members of the martyred leader’s family are expected to participate in the Iraq proceedings.
The final burial is scheduled for Thursday in Mashhad, the leader’s birthplace, where Ayatollah Khamenei will be laid to rest beside the shrine of Imam al-Ridha, the eighth Shia Imam, in accordance with his stated wishes.
