Over 85,000 demonstrates flooded the streets of Tel Aviv on Saturday evening for the 39th consecutive week of demonstrations against proposed so called judicial amendments by the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The reforms have generated a deep division among Israelis, fueling one of the largest protest movements in the Zionist’s history.
Critics of the proposed so called judicial reform argue that it would undermine the nation’s rule-of-law. The contentious amendment would give lawmakers more control over the attorneys who are appointed to serve as judges in Israel’s district courts. Supporters of the measure, on the other hand, argue that the judiciary is too liberal and dismissive of Israel’s national security interests.
In a further sign of dissent, an increasing number of reservists in the Israeli occupation army have joined the protest movement, with many of them declaring their refusal to serve. Although Israeli illegal settlers are mandatory to serve in the occupation forces, they are free to join the reserve force afterward where they could be called up to serve without prior notice.
