The General Directorate of the Presidency of the Republic sent a letter to the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers stating that the draft decree received from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers to amend Decree 6433 needs a decision taken by the Cabinet collectively according to the opinion of the Legislative and Consultation Commission, even with a caretaker government, given its importance and the consequences thereof, especially since the signatory ministers linked their signature to the approval of the decree in the Council of Ministers.
“We inform you that the draft decree referred to above and attached to the request for exceptional approval is based in its construction on the approval of the Council of Ministers, which did not happen, on what should be the correct legal status in accordance with the opinion of the Legislation and Consultation Commission No. 17 dated 17/2/2021,” the letter read, “It remains that the President of the Republic takes into account all the repercussions and circumstances that dictate him to take such stances regarding the safety of the homeland.”
It is worth noting that the amendment would add around 1,400 square km (540 square miles) to the exclusive economic zone of Lebanon.
